How to Avoid being a Fashion “Don’t”

By Abby on May 14 2008 at 02:29 PM

I don’t claim to be an expert, but sometimes I wonder what certain women are thinking when they leave the house. From messy hair to clothing that looks five sizes too small, these obvious fashion mistakes make me cringe when I see them. That’s why I’m going to show you how to avoid being a fashion “Don’t” and instead rock the look that will have people wanting to copy your style.

The following fashion mistakes are entirely too common but easily avoidable. Continue reading for ways to fix these unsightly fashion faux pas.

Makeup Mayhem
Too much makeup WILL draw attention to you – but not the type of attention you’re looking for! Lines will appear deeper and more pronounced, and you’ll look harsh – not an appealing look.
I’m all for a little fun and experimentation when it comes to makeup, but if you end up looking like Vampira, you know you’ve used too much!
Keep daytime makeup to a minimum, but feel free to go a little darker in the evening. Creating a balanced look is key – if you have dark eye makeup, keep the rest of your makeup subtle and understated. Conversely, feel free to play up your lipcolor if you have a low-key eye look going on.

Snug Clothing?
I love wearing form fitting clothing, but if it bulges or bags there’s a problem. It’s tempting to buy the hottest styles because they’re in season, but clothes that are too small can actually make you look larger!

Purchase clothing that conforms to your body, but make sure it actually fits.

No one wants to see your Bra
You may have been able to get away with visible bra straps when you were a teenager, but that look screams no. If you’re wearing a sleeveless top, do yourself a favor and purchase a well-fitting strapless bra. Bra straps are not attractive.
Similarly, if we can see your bra through your clothing, double up on layers or buy a bra that matches your skin tone – contrary to popular belief, a white bra underneath a white shirt doesn’t work. Buy a neutral or tan colored bra to wear under your whites.

Colors Count
Your favorite color might be attractive on another woman, but if it doesn’t flatter your skin tone it shouldn’t be on your body.
Wearing colors that don’t complement your skin tone will make you appear sallow and sickly looking, and make wrinkles more prominent. Get an honest friend to tell you what colors look best with your skin tone if you’re unsure what would work.
The right colors will transform you from drab to fab in a matter of minutes!

I chose to focus on the fashion mistakes I come across frequently, although these are certainly not the only ones to avoid. However, by concentrating on your overall appearance and utilizing the above tips, you can become a fashion do – instead of a fashion don’t!
